Foundational Scripture for Healing

It is God’s Will for us to be healed, and By Jesus’ Stripes, we Were Healed:

Isaiah 53:5

But He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.

1 Peter 2:24

He Himself bore our sins in his body on the cross so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed.

PRAYER:

Father God, we thank You that divine health and healing are Your perfect will for us. Lord Jesus, we thank You that You redeemed us from all sickness and disease on the cross, that Your Blood was shed for the forgiveness of our sins, and that by the stripes You received, we were healed.  We thank You that healing belongs to us, it’s part of Your finished work on the cross and part of our redemptive inheritance in Christ.

Old testament:

Gen 3 story:

Sickness came from the curse/the fall. This Includes sickness/fall of the earth.

Deut 28: 15/61 explains that sickness is part of the curse.

Deut 30: 19-20

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse.  So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give them.

Deut 28 explains how this looks–obedience

Exodus 15:26 I am the Lord that heals you.

Exodus 23: 25

Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you

Deuteronomy 7: 14-15

…The Lord will remove from you all sickness; and He will not put on you any of the harmful diseases of Egypt which you have known.

Psalm 23: 1-3

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake

Psalm 30:2 O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

Psalm 41:3 The Lord nurses them when they are sick and restores them to health.

Not only is it God’s Will, and Jesus’ Stripes, but remember that reading the Word, hearing the Word, believing the Word in your heart is also God’s medicine for us:

Proverbs 4: 20-22

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my Words, Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.

Psalm 107: 20

He sent out his Word and healed them;  He rescued them from the grave.

Isaiah 57: 19

creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I will heal them.”

HOMEWORK: find Old Testament passages/scriptures about healing from Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Malachi.

New Testament:

Jesus’ ministry and time on earth, what the cross meant for us, and God’s new covenant and healing provisions.

Jesus is on scene:

Acts 10:38

God gave the Holy Spirit and power to Jesus from Nazareth. He was with Jesus, as he went around doing good and healing everyone who was under the power of the devil.

WHO ANOINTED JESUS? God

WHO WAS WITH JESUS? Holy Spirit and God

SO WHAT WAS THEIR WILL FOR US (God Son Holy Spirit)?  To do good and heal all that were oppressed by the devil

Jesus revealed the will of the Father in all He said and did.

John 5:19 Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent me (the Will of the Father

Through Jesus’ life and ministry He showed us exactly what the will of God is.  Jesus only did the will of God. As we observe what Jesus said and did in the area of health and healing, we will be able to clearly see what the Father God’s will is.

Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.

JESUS SAID THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD WAS UPON HIM TO DO WHAT. Preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recover sight to the blind, to set liberty to those that are bruised

Matthew 9:35

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

WHAT THREE THINGS DID JESUS DO IN ALL THE CITIES AND VILLAGES?  Teaching in synagogues, preaching gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease.

Notice that the teaching and preaching preceded healing.  This makes sense, because the majority of those healed under Jesus’ ministry were healed by their own faith.

For you AT HOME:

Go through Matthew 10 and their mission.

Look up these verses and note what Jesus always did to and for those who were sick. Also, what moved Jesus to heal people?

Matt 4:23, 24

Matt 8:6, 7, 16, 17

Matt 9: 35

Matt 12: 15

Matt 14: 14, 34-36

Matt 15: 30

Matt 19: 2

Matt 20: 30-34

Matt 21: 14

Luke 4: 38, 39

Mark 1: 40-42

Mark 6: 54-56

Everything Jesus said and did, He was revealing the will of the Father. It is clear from these scriptures that healing is for all who will believe in the Father’s will.

Matthew 9: 2-6

2 Some people soon brought to him a man lying on a mat because he could not walk. When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “My friend, don't worry! Your sins are forgiven.”

…Is it easier for me to tell this man his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and walk? 6 But I will show you that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth….

Jesus said it was equally easy for Him to do what? Forgive sin and/or heal sickness

So, this time Jesus decided to forgive his sin, what immediately followed? He was healed

James 5:14-15

14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Healing and forgiveness go hand and hand here too.

Jesus at the Cross:

The damage that brought sin into the world also brought sickness.  Jesus put away sin on the cross, and everything that came with it.

Romans 5:12

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned.

HOW DID SIN ENTER THE WORLD? One man’s sin

WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF SIN? Death came

WHO DID DEATH PASS TO? everyone

On the cross Jesus redeemed us, spirit soul and body.

Isaiah 53: 4

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

According to this, what did Christ bear for us on the cross? Griefs and sorrrows

GRIEFS definition: The Hebrew word for griefs (KHOLEE) is translated as disease, grief and sickness in other places of the bible.

Deut 7:15, 28:61, 1Kings 17:17, 2Kings 13:14

SORROWS definition: The Hebrew word for sorrows (MAKOBAW) in translated to grief and pain in other places in the bible  Job 33:19, Jeremiah 51:8

Matthew 8:16-17

When evening came, they brought to Him many who were [a]under the power of demons, and He drove out the spirits with a word and restored to health all who were sick.

And thus He fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, He Himself took [[b]in order to carry away] our weaknesses and infirmities and bore [c]away our diseases.

Jesus was quoting Isaiah 53:4

According to verse 16, what was Jesus doing before He quoted Isaiah 53:4? Casting out spirits and healing the sick….with HIS WORD

Isaiah 53: 5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed

Here we see a threefold: we have been redeemed-spirit, soul and body!

Jesus was wounded and bruised for our transgressions and iniquities, our spirit was redeemed.

When He was chastised for our peace, our soul (mind, emotions and will), was redeemed.

When Jesus received stripes in His body, our physical bodies were redeemed.

At the Cross, Jesus destroyed sin and sickness

Galatians 3: 13

Christ purchased our freedom [redeeming us] from the curse (doom) of the Law [and its condemnation] by [Himself] becoming a curse for us, for it is written [in the Scriptures], Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree (is crucified)

Galatians 4:4-7

But when the time was right, God sent his Son, and a woman gave birth to him. His Son obeyed the Law, 5  so he could set us free from the Law, and we could become God's children. 6  Now that we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. And his Spirit tells us that God is our Father. 7 You are no longer slaves. You are God's children, and you will be given what he has promised.

OUR NEW AND BETTER COVENANT after the Cross

With GOD nothing is impossible to the believer

Matt 19:26, Mark 9:23, Luke 1:37

... who prays

Matt 21:22, Mark 11:24, John 14: 13-14

Matt 19: 19-20

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

God calls sickness the work of the devil (like we just learned that sickness is part of the curse of the fall in the old testament). (work-not meaning demonized or oppressed all the time, but the works of him through the curse, and Not of GOD in any way).

Luke 13: 10-16

10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

13 And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Verse 11: what was behind this woman’s sickness? spirit of infirmity

Verse 16: Jesus said WHO was behind this woman’s bondage for 18 years? Satan

Verse 12 and 13: what did Jesus do for this woman? He spoke for her to be loosed the infirmity, and laid hands on her

Acts 10:38

38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

What did Jesus do? went about doing good and healing

Who had oppressed people with sickness? the devil

John 10:10

10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

What does the thief come to do, and who is it? The thief is the devil, and his goal is to steal kill and destroy.

Does sickness/disease steal, kill and/or destroy  (person’s life, money, time, peace)?

What did Jesus come to do? Give abundant life and abundance

Are sickness and disease part of the abundant life? no

1 John 3:8-9

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[a] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

For what purpose was the Son of God manifested? To destroy the works of the devil

What are some of the devil’s works? Sickness and disease

What part of us is born again in GOD and is sinless (therefore in perfect health)? Our spirit

To destroy means to loosen, break up, unloose, melt, put off. Basically to loosen the devil’s hold on believers and unloose his power.

God’s Will on Earth is the same as His Will in Heaven

Matthew 6:10

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Is there sickness in heaven?  No

God Wants Healthy Temples for the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 3:16

Do you not know that you[a] are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?

1 Corinthians 6:19

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.

Under the old covenant God’s dwelling place as a temple made with hands.  God gave the Israelites explicit instructions for making His temple. God required it to be perfect.  Only the finest precious metals and stones were used in God’s temple. It was flawless.

If our bodies under the new covenant are the dwelling place for the Holy Spirit, would He want His temple to be afflicted with sickness or disease?  Of course not; He would want our bodies to be fit and healthy and strong, and courageous.

Closing prayer:

Father God, I thank You that Your grace has provided for every need in my life.  I will walk in Your promises, believe Your Word, and receive Your healing.  I will not be passive.  I will not allow the weeds of fallen humanity live in my life.  I am a new creation in You, and I choose to walk in Your abundant life!

In the name of Jesus

Amen
